Pneumatic impact wrench - buyer guidelines
A pneumatic wrench It is a very powerful tool and an invaluable air tool for most automotive mechanics and technicians.

The pneumatic or air wrench is a socket wrench power tool devised to render high torque output with minimal physical effort by the operator, by harnessing energy in a rotating mass, then supplying it suddenly to the output shaft.

The pneumatic wrench is also called:
- impact wrench
- impactor
- air wrench
- air gun
- rattle gun
- torque gun

Compressed air is the most prevalent power supply for air wrenches. Then again, the electric powered design is also common.

There is an ever more popular design of pneumatic wrench, namely the battery powered cordless type. Advances in battery storage technology mean this type of impact wrench is particularly popular for the mobile mechanic and home prosumer.

Impact wrenches are widely used in a wide range of industries, which include: automotive repair; heavy equipment maintenance; product assembly (often regarded as "pulse tools" and engineered for precise torque output); major construction projects, and any other instance where a high torque output is necessary.

Impact wrenches are offered in every standard socket wrench drive size, for instance:small 1/4" drive tools for small assembly and disassembly, up to 3.5" and larger square drives for major construction and heavy duty industrial applications. Impact wrenches are one of the most popular air tools, and are found in just about all automotive mechanic shops.

There are many brand names of air impact gun in the marketplace to choose from. Some of the more popular brands include:

Impact wrenches are offered in all regular socket sizes and in various styles, depending on the application.

- The smaller 1/4" drive wrench is generally offered for both 'inline' (the user holds the tool like a screwdriver), and pistol grip styles (as the name suggests, held like a pistol). A more uncommon style is the angle drive wrench. This is similar to an inline wrench tool, but with a set of bevel gears to rotate the output end 90 degrees to the handle grip.

- Impact wrenches of the 3/8" size are most commonly available in pistol grip type. Also available in the market place is a specific inline style known as a "butterfly" wrench, which has a large, flat throttle paddle on {one side|the side| of the tool which can be tilted to one side or the other to manipulate the direction of rotation, rather than using a separate reversing control. This interesting design profile gives access into limited work areas.

- Standard inline and angle 3/8" drive impact wrenches are uncommon, although they are available from specialist store outlets.

- Impact wrench 1/2" drive units are pretty much only available in pistol grip shape, with any inline type difficult to find, mainly due to the enhanced torque fed back to the operator and the greater weight of the tool necessitating the bigger handle.

- Impact wrench 3/4" drive impact wrenches are mainly only available for purchase in pistol grip form.

- Impact drive tools of the 1" size are available for purchase in both pistol grip and "D handle" inline models. The latter design features an enclosed handle grip on the back of the tool. Both of those forms often feature a side handle, allowing for the user to use booth hands to hold the tool.

- Impact drive tools 1.25" and bigger wrenches are usually found in "T handle" style, with two big handles on either side of the tool body housing, enabling for optimum torque to be applied by the operator, and giving the best control of the tool.

Sockets are a necessary requirement for using a pneumatic wrench Its also essential to use good quality sockets. Specialized impact sockets are designed to take the abuse of these powerful tools. An average socket will fatigue under such high torque scenarios. Thus, it is recommend to obtain the best air impact wrench and matching sockets your budget provides.
